Educação profissional brasileira e assistência estudantil nos cursos técnicos: um estudo de caso no IFRS - Campus Sertão

Abstract

IFRS-Campus Sertão, now expanded to offer technical courses and higher, is a fiftieth institution, that throughout its trajectory, won notorious regional recognition in training of professionals of the field. This study aims at investigating whether the practices of student assistance have changed over time and are consistent with the current expansion of technical education. Just as it contextualized it in the history of Brazilian professional education because of its social relevance for the middle region where it operates. Rescued to the aims of its foundation and the institutional changes over time in relation to student selection practices and to boarding school, and aimed to draw the students' socioeconomic profile of the current technical courses offered. There was also the opinion of the school community about the fate of the seats in internship. He drew up a comparison between the socioeconomic profile of students internal and external, to identify issues that would justify or not to offer the home school to students of a particular course at the expense of others. This work was characterized by the use of the technique of case study, opting for a search in two steps. The first exploratory stage (qualitative) aimed to identify factors relevant historical IFRS - Campus Sertão and gather the views of education professionals on student assistance, with emphasis on home schooling. The second stage descriptive (quantitative) aimed to identify the socioeconomic profile of students of technical courses offered by the institution and investigates the need for expansion of welfare policies for retention and completion of courses. Given the analysis undertaken, it was found that the creation of IFRS - Campus Sertão answered the government's political goals of the epoch, providing agricultural education for the farmers’ children, although this type of education has always faced a demand greater than supply of vacancies, requiring, then, a selection criterion for admission. Several methods of selecting students were tested in order to provide opportunities for economically disadvantaged students and to profile performance in the field. The boarding school is configured as one of the most significant actions of the institution's student assistance, but must be reshaped to serve as an effective student assistance promoting inclusion and social justice.
