Abstract

This present dissertation aims to analyze the social and economical structure of the Imperial Fazenda of Santa Cruz and the construction of Industrial Slaughterhouse, between the 1870s and 1890s, in order to understand the various forms of property that the Farm had before being decided that it would receive such undertaking. It is notorious that for such, the relations of power permeated in this transfer, among the agents inserted in this economic sector. Therefore, this work aims to investigate who these agents were and how the need for this transference came up, the debates until the choice of the Farm and the problems acquired in the construction and operation of the new Slaughterhouse. For this, we used the Minutes of the City Council, the termination of the contract with the contractor and the publications of that time in the Gazeta de Notícias newspaper. For these types of documents we can notice that the economic and social issues regarding the green meat trade.
