O estágio supervisionado externo no IFET Baiano - Campus Senhor do Bonfim: implicações e perspectivas

Abstract

In this research we propose to investigate the inconsistencies observed in the performance of 12th grade students at the Senhor do Bonfim Campus of the Bahian Federal Institute of Science and technology, while doing External Supervised On-the-job Training (EST), a subject of secondary school level technical courses. A significant number of students feel that this subject should only be a course completion prerequisite to those who intend to look for a job immediately after High School graduation with the expectation of guaranteeing a permanent job opportunity. This interpretation finds support in the initial trends of the Brazilian Professional Education that aimed to educate, through labor, orphaned and abandoned children and gave a distorted connotation to the definition of labor manual or physical effort to which it added the notion of suffering and servitude. And still holds this perception in the 21st century. Nevertheless, the on-the-job training represents an opportunity to practice the skills and competences developed during the school years and also acquire new knowledge in the specific field of the on-the-job training. The biggest contribution of this discipline, however, is related to the individual preparation of the students and their familiarization with real life and work exigencies, such as: initiative, responsibility, self-determination, and the most relevant aspect intrinsic to every person the development of interpersonal relations. To proceed with the survey a semi-open questionnaire was used, involving a wide range of information, starting with items related to social background, family income and specific data about the External Supervised Training (EST) itself. This instrument allowed us to identify the difficulties encountered during EST, the extent of student interest, and their adequacy to the course, thus clarifying some of the inconsistencies initially mentioned. We start with the presumption that labor is an educational principle. With this understanding, professional education will be seen under a different perception and EST will be accepted as an educational act an improvement of the human qualities of the students through the development of their ethical formation, critical reasoning and intellectual autonomy.
