As Doutoras: a repercussão da formatura em medicina de Ermelinda Lopes de Vasconcellos no final do século XIX (1880-1890)

Abstract

This study has as a study object Ermelinda Lopes de Vasconcellos. I plan to investigate the repercussion of her graduation in Medicine at the "Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro" in 1888, through cariocas newspapers and Carnival of 1889. From that, I discuss the social context that Ermelinda graduated and how was it possible for her to pursue her career, in other words, how were the strategies she used and which were her difficulties? As for the time cutting, I opted for the years from 1880 to 1890, in that way, I try to put into evidence the speeches about her graduation and about the female introduction into the doctor's career. Thus, through Ermelinda's analysis, I try to understand the mechanisms of gender and class exclusion in the medicine field and social imaginary in the second half of the 19th century.
