Abstract

This dissertation aims, based on Heimskringla, the compilation of sagas of the kings of Norway, to study the relations between war, Viking warrior culture and the Norse monarchy in the conquest and maintenance of the power of Norwegian kings in the period of the centuries X and XI. In this way, the relevance of the warlike acts in the constitution of the legitimation and charisma necessary for a Scandinavian Viking-Era monarch to be accepted as leader of his allies and subjects, starting from the principle of war as a preponderant cultural factor over the political, and being closely linked to the Scandinavian culture of the historical period in question
