" O Voto de saias na primeira república": o debate sobre o sufrágio feminino no periódico carioca A NOITE, na década de 1920

Abstract

This work was done from the consultation of a periodical within the website of the National Digital Library of the National Library that is available online. The TSE (Higher Electoral Court) and TRE-RN (Regional Electoral Court of the State of Rio Grande do Norte) website were also consulted, as well as an extensive biography of the feminist movement and the campaign on female suffrage during the End of the Imperial and First Republic periods. The Political Dictionary of the First Republic of CPDOC / FGV was consulted, which is available online and finally the texts of the Constitution granted in 1824, the Electoral Reform of 1881 (Saraiva Law) and the Constitution of 1891. From the research in these sources it was concluded that Women gained the rightto vote at the end of the nineteenth century in the Empire and in the First Republic from the breaches in the text of the Constitution of 1891 some women managed to win the right to vote and in the State of Rio Grande do Norte Law in the Legislative Assembly of this State whose text was consulted that regulated the female suffrage in the municipal and state scope and besides the victory of a woman in an electoral suit for mayor (a) in a municipality of the RN. Using the Rio newspaper, A Noite (available on the BN Digital Newspaper website) to observe how the newspaper reported the debate about the regulation of female suffrage for all Brazil that was being discussed in the National Congress and the repercussions of the approval of female suffrage in Rio Grande Of the North in the city of Rio de Janeiro that was the capital of the Republic.
