Rumo a um mundo de sistemas alimentares urbanos?

Abstract

In the second half of the 20th century the urban population tripled globally and now for the first time in history more people live in urban areas than in rural areas. By 2050, two-thirds of the world's population is expected to be living in urban areas. In this context, the concept of city is redefined no longer as a component of division between urban and rural world, but as an integrated form of social life. In this new dynamic of accelerated urbanization, urban agriculture becomes a natural component of city design that is seen as a central element in the implementation and development of urban food systems that can respond to the next challenges of social, climatic and food security. Our thesis analyzes the evolution of the global agri-food system, in particular the context of growing criticism of its organization in the predominant form of long chains – which spend resources and move away from production and consumption points. Urban agriculture, in its various forms, can be seen with a continuation and radicalization of this criticism. In this thesis, we analyze the different forms of urban agriculture, highlighting the new types of investments that point to a historical redefinition of the relations between city and countryside.
