A Construção de uma imagem: a representação das favelas cariocas no início do século XX a partir das charges

Abstract

At the beginning of the twentieth century the city of Rio de Janeiro goes through various urban transformations that propose to change the space and the people that were in it. The city reached a contradictory moment, at the same time that it offered great opportunities of employment, it did not have a place to allocate all this existing population and that arrived. The favela, which until then was a space in a slow process of growth, quickly became a living space for these workers. To the point that not only Morro da Providência and Morro de Santo Antônio had the number of people who arrived. Therefore, soon other hills of the city also happened to be occupied. In the midst of these questions, the journalistic media began the formation of some speeches about these hills and about who these inhabitants would be. This work has the challenge of investigating the main topics and representations about the favelas of the city of Rio de Janeiro and its inhabitants through the use of the humorous discourse of cartoons in the illustrated magazine O Malho in the period 1902 - 1930.
