Possibilidades de conciliação entre a agricultura sustentável e a conservação da biodiversidade no Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca - Rio de Janeiro, RJ - Brasil

Abstract

Currently it is considered as the most effective strategy for protecting natural areas the creation of Protected Areas. Nevertheless often traditional populations who live locally to generations and are responsible for the maintenance of local biodiversity end up being unfairly relocated. This case study seeks to evaluate this type of conflict that also exists in the “Pedra Branca” State Park, in the western area of the city of Rio de Janeiro, and conciliate the different opinions about the existing nature conservation among local actors. Today in the Park area there is a growing and strengthening links between farmers who have Agroecology in their way of living and consider them having the ideology and the tools necessary to conserve the biodiversity of the Park. Visits to different places of the Pedra Branca Massif were performed, as well as semi-structured interviews with three different classes of individuals, including: Farmers and women farmers who live and work within the Park, members of the management PEPB and external actors involved in this process. It is noticed that there is a strong relationship of third-sector organizations, as well as Universities and also FIOCRUZ with these farmers, seeking to carry out a quality technical assistance, and to approve projects that can assist in networking between these farmers and ensure your access to different spheres of public policy. The management of PEPB represented by INEA shows a certain openness to agroecological practices such as conservation methodology but still keeps linked to current legislation does not allow for human presence in parks. The study concludes that all stakeholders have the same main goal, which is to ensure the conservation of biodiversity in one of the largest urban forests in the world. The reconciliation of agroecological farming with an Integral Protection kind of Protected Area is feasible and can be an innovative strategy to enhance both the quality of visitation and public use as the primary purpose of preserving this part of the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro City
