Abstract: The main goal of this research was to analyze the occurrence of six groups of insects (Scolytinae, Platypodinae, Bostrichidae, Cerambycidae, Curculionidae and Nitidulidae) in a grassland and forest fragment areas, in order to provide a discussion which promotes that fosters the understanding of the occurrence of these insects in function assessed ecosystem, generating data that signal the possibility of bioindication in future work with these organisms. The collections were made weekly in Ipiabas, a district of Barra do Piraí, RJ, through the installation of eight impact traps, semi funnel model in the study areas, being four traps in the grassland area and four in the forest fragment area, with a distance of 50 meters between each trap. The samples were collected from May 2012 to May 2013. A total of 4796 beetles were collected, being that 3275 (67.9 %) individuals were captured in forest fragment and 1521 (32.03%) in grassland area. In the forest fragment, the Nitidulidae family was the most frequent, while in grassland the most frequently was Scolytinae subfamily. Regarding theinfluence of meteorological factors on the population fluctuation of the insects, for theNitidulidae family, there was a significant correlation with temperature and insolation. The occurrence of beetles was higher in rainy period and similar at the edge and inside the forest fragment. Nitidulidae was the group of insects that showed the greatest sensitivity to changes in the environment and between seasons, suggesting their use in works that discuss bioindication.
